Scalp Micropigmentation vs. Microblading: What's the Difference?

Published July 11, 2026

Scalp micropigmentation and microblading are both cosmetic pigmentation techniques, and enough providers on this directory offer both that it's worth being clear on how they differ — they are not the same service applied to different body parts.

Different area, different goal

SMP is applied to the scalp to replicate the look of shaved hair follicles, add density to thinning hair, or camouflage scars. Microblading is applied to the eyebrows, using a fine blade-like tool to create individual hair-like strokes that fill in or reshape a brow.

Different technique

Microblading uses a hand tool to create fine cut-like strokes near the skin's surface. SMP uses a machine to deposit thousands of small, individual pigment dots — mimicking the round cross-section of a hair follicle, not a stroke. The technique, depth, and pigment used for scalp work are chosen specifically for the scalp's skin, which differs from eyebrow skin.

Different fade pattern

Both are semi-permanent and fade over time, but on different timelines and for different reasons tied to where they're applied and how they're done. Ask any provider directly what they expect for your specific situation rather than assuming one technique's maintenance schedule applies to the other.

Same artist, different service

Several providers on this directory list both scalp micropigmentation and eyebrow microblading as services they offer. That doesn't mean the two are interchangeable — it means some studios have built a broader cosmetic-pigmentation practice covering more than one area of the body. If you're booking either, ask specifically about the artist's experience with that exact procedure, not just cosmetic tattooing in general.
